Visit: April 2011
We stayed at the Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel in Munich. Munich, itself, offers a unique combination of a city life mixed with the calmness of the countryside as well as being a progressive city surrounded by the history that lead the city to be what it is today. The Charles Hotel is located in the heart of the city next to the Old Botanical Garden, with the Old Town and shopping center close by. On our tour of the city, we stopped at the Nymphenburg Palace, “Castle of the Nymph”, a Baroque palace in Munich built in 1675. It used to be the favored summer residence for the rulers of Bavaria after the Treaty of Nymphenburg was signed in 1741. Today it’s open to the public but continues to be the home for the head of the house of Wittelsbach. We later took a tour out to Dachau, the first of the Nazi concentration camps to open in Germany. It’s located about 16k northwest of Munich, a short drive.
